Be effective – or be nice? Why be obliged to choose?
How do you like to be spoken to?
Since the company’s inception, Interactifs has posed this question to over 100,000 participants in more than 30 countries.
The responses have been unanimous: “the message needs to be simple, clear, direct, precise, concise and straight to the point… as long as it’s delivered with courtesy, respect, politeness, warmth and when possible a touch of humour.”
These preferences are universal, independent of the culture, nationality, age, gender or management level of the person responding.
What changes from one culture to another and from one person to another is the manner of being direct whilst remaining courteous, polite and respectful
How do people speak to you?
Too many meetings and conversations are characterised by the unsaid, the implicit, by hidden meanings, hints, suggestions and manipulation.
This is the often the unconscious result of people’s attempts to reconcile being ‘straight to the point’ with remaining civilised, or trying to be direct without being brutal.
Put simply, the Interactifs Discipline© teaches us all to close the gap between how we like to be treated ourselves and how we treat others.
